Shopping in Sardinia

Sardinia – Coastal View

While on vacation some travellers research the best museums, others the most dazzling beaches, and others still choose their vacation spots based on their shopping options. If you are a shopper–especially one who also favors sun dappled islands–then Sardinia is the perfect place for you!

One of the most dazzling areas in Italy, Sardinia offers both natural beauty and many options for visitors who are looking to spend some time in the shops. A large island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Sardinia is close to Corsica, Tunisia, and the Balearic Islands of Spain. The island grows vegetables, rice, citrus fruits and, most importantly, grapes, and is also famous throughout Italy for its cheese.

Traditional Products

If you are looking to shop for traditional items then Sardinia is the place for you. The island is known for its many traditional food products, including wines and cheeses, which make it a gastronomical delight. Some items, like Civraxiu bread, is a regional specialty that can only be found on the island. Originally eaten only by the poor of the island, this bread features a crisp crust and soft interior and is usually very dark in color. Sardinian mullets and nougats also have a very distinct taste and are thought to be very delicious.

Wedge of Pecorino Cheese

Anyone visting Sardinia should try the regional cheeses, such as pecorino and casizzolu, which are widely available on the island. Home to many olive groves the island also produces wonderful olive oil and is one of the best places in Italy to purchase saffron or zafferano. And while you’re at it why not try a typical Sardinian-style savory pie like Sas Panadas? You definitely won’t be sorry.

Of course, no food shopping trip in Sardinia would be complete without picking up a couple of bottles of local wine.

Outdoor Shopping in Sardinia

Participating in outdoor shopping is one of the best ways to understand the local lifestyle in Sardinia. Moreover, the open air markets give shoppers a chance to purchase unique and original handicrafts created by the islanders. In traditional shops these items go for a drastically higher price, so it is always better to buy them at market.

Visitors should not miss the weekly food markets, where locals go to buy their fresh products. It is certainly a different experience than the produce section at your local grocery store.

Some markets to try include the Mercato San Benedetto (Via Cocco Ortu, Via Baccaredda) in Cagliari, the Mercato Civico (Piazza Colonnello Serra) in Sassari, and the Mercato Civico in Piazza Ciusa in Carbonia. In Cagliari the open air market is held on the second Sunday of every month in the Piazza Carlo Alberto. This market features plenty of handicrafts and antique items at low prices. There are around 40 to 50 stands in the market and it is a good opportunity to find some rare objects at low prices. The flea market in Sassari is also quite unique and visitors can find original antiques and many unusual and interesting objects, new as well as used.

Sardinia – Cagliari

Shopping in Cagliari

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and one of the most visited cities in the region. The city has plenty of good places where visitors can find almost anything they are looking for. From modern fashion stores to traditional shopping streets, Cagliari has something for everyone.

The areas of Largo Carlo Felice and Via Roma are lined with plenty of stores where visitors can browse through high fashion boutiques, jewelry, footwear, bags and accessories. There are also many stores selling local brands for those who are interested in purchasing local clothing items. Vias Garibaldi and Manno are great pedestrian streets filled with stores selling handicrafts, clothing and accessories. The areas of Via Dante and Via Paoli are also good spots for shopping. Those looking for good shopping in Cagliari will not be disappointed as their shop districts have often been compared to Copenhagen’s Stroget.

Shopping in Sassari

Sassari is a province and city in the region of Sardinia that offers a wide variety of places to shop. One should take note, however, that high fashion does not have a home in Sassari. Instead the city offers a wide variety of more traditional craft items and food products. In Sassari visitors can purchase excellent quality olive oil, wines, and cheeses produced in the region.

Traditional Berry Liquor (Mirto Sardo)

Shopping in Oristano

Oristano is a province and town in Sardinia. In Oristano visitors can visit the weekly food markets to get a glimpse into the everyday life of the Sardinian people. These markets are still very traditional in nature and are very crowded and noisy, but equally fun. Visitors can find fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of fresh sea food and other food items.

Oristano also offers many handicraft stores where visitors can purchase artifacts made by locals. There are also many bakeries one can visit to sample regional breads to be paired with traditional Sardinian cheeses, great for a light lunch. Cheese and olive oil, as well as olives, are also available in Oristano.

Whether interested in high fashion or open air markets shopping in Sardinia truly does offer something for everyone.
