The 2024 Venice Carnival is scheduled to enchant spectators from February 3rd to February 13th, 2024, with an exciting array of festivities. Yet, the celebrations kick off even earlier with pre-carnival events starting on January 27th.

With the theme “To the Orient: Marco Polo’s Amazing Journey,” this year’s celebration commemorates the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing on January 8, 1324. The Venetian carnival tradition welcomes back one of its greatest travelers, Marco Polo, to the mesmerizing Venice lagoon. Embarking on a thematic exploration of travel, discovery, and encounters with previously unimagined worlds, the carnival invites visitor to delve into the spirit of exploration that characterized Polo’s legendary expeditions.

From January 27 to February 13, Venice transforms into a captivating canvas for an enchanting fantasy expedition. This remarkable journey sweeps guests through labyrinthine alleys, picturesque fields, vibrant streets, and lively squares, where a spectacle of shows, music, and art unfolds. The Carnival unfolds as a dynamic tapestry, seamlessly weaving its magic across the city’s diverse landscape, spanning from the enchanting islands to the bustling mainland.

The Venice Carnival offers numerous activities, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. Much of the fun of the festival is to be found in wandering the streets and soaking up the atmosphere. The essence of the Venice Carnival lies in its masks. Entire costumes are created around the selection of a mask. This tradition dates back to the 5th century. Masquerades come from all over the world to take part in this tradition. A highlight of the carnival is the Best Masked Costume Competition, held daily at 11:00 am throughout the ten-day celebration. Daily winners earn the prestigious opportunity to join the grand finale parade held on the carnival’s closing Sunday.

The Venice Carnival encompasses both public and private festivities. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy free public events and marvel at extravagant costumes. However, after dusk, the celebration shifts to private Venetian Palaces, where masquerade balls and exclusive parties come to life under the veil of night.

Instead of merely observing the parade, consider becoming a part of it! Indeed, everyone has the opportunity to join, and there are no fees for participation. Plus, there’s no need to worry about stage fright since you’ll be hidden behind a mask. Families traveling to Venice can also delight in the chance for children to take part, with designated slots just for them.

Not sure what to wear for the Venice Carnival? Most tourists don’t dress up for Venice Carnival and instead prefer to just admire the gorgeous 17th century costumes, hooded capes and incredible masks. If you’re attending one of the grand balls, adhering to the Italian Masquerade Ball dress code is a must—think black-tie elegance coupled with your most extravagant mask. For a more authentic experience, consider embracing tradition by acquiring a classic Venetian masquerade ensemble, complete with the distinctive high collar and puffy sleeves.

During the carnival, Venice’s streets and squares pulsate with the energy of street performers, musicians, and entertainers. Prepare to be immersed in a variety of musical genres, from classical melodies to authentic Venetian folk tunes, while also encountering skilled jugglers, agile acrobats, and captivating living statues.

The Venice Carnival is a magical and unforgettable experience that combines history, culture, and celebration in one of the world’s most enchanting cities. Whether you’re attending masked balls, watching parades, or simply wandering the streets of Venice, the carnival offers something for everyone to enjoy.
