2024 is already the best year for Italian tennis

In recent years, Italian tennis has experienced a remarkable rise. The national team has seen an increasing number of talents establishing themselves among the top in the world, both in the ATP and WTA rankings. Jannik Sinner’s recent victory at the US Open, Lorenzo Musetti’s podium finish at the Olympics, and Sara Errani’s records are just a few of the significant achievements reached.

January 28, 2024: Sinner wins the Australian Open

Jannik Sinner is currently the brightest star in Italian tennis. He leads the ATP rankings with over 11,000 points, leaving German Alexander Zverev behind at 7,000.

Sinner’s first major victory of 2024 came at the Australian Open, where he defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev in the final. By winning the slam, the Italian added 2,000 points to his ATP ranking.

February 18, 2024: Sinner wins the Rotterdam Open

Less than three weeks later, Sinner moved to Rotterdam Ahoy for the 51st edition of the Rotterdam Open. He defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 2-0 in the final, winning a prize of approximately 400,000 euros and 500 ATP points.

March 31, 2024: Sinner wins the Miami Open

At the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, the 39th edition of the Miami Open took place, a part of the ATP and WTA 1000 series with a prize pool of $1,000,000. Sinner claimed the title once again, defeating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 2-0 in the final. This was his third title of 2024 and his second at a Master 1000 event.

June 23, 2024: Sinner wins the Halle Open

For the ATP 500 tournament, Sinner then traveled to Germany for the 31st edition of the Halle Open, held at the Owl Arena. This was his fourth title of the year, as he defeated Polish Hubert Hurkacz 2-0 in the final, earning 421,790 euros and 500 ATP points.

August 3, 2024: Musetti wins Bronze at the Paris Olympics

Lorenzo Musetti, born in 2002 and the youngest Italian ever to win a Junior Slam at the age of 16 years and 10 months, achieved his first major milestone on the global stage with a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Before this historic bronze, his biggest achievement was reaching the Wimbledon semifinals in 2024.

With this bronze medal, Musetti became the second Italian in history to win an Olympic medal in tennis after Uberto de Morpurgo, exactly 100 years ago.

August 4, 2024: Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini win Gold at the Paris Olympics

From Paris came another significant triumph in women’s tennis. Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini brought Italy its first-ever medal in the Olympic tennis doubles, defeating the Russian pair Mirra Andreeva and Diana Šnaider in the final.

August 18, 2024: Sinner wins the Cincinnati Masters 1000

On August 18, Jannik won his fifth title of the year, the 123rd edition of the tournament, which is part of the ATP and WTA 1000 series. In the USA, he secured a prize of 1,049,460 dollars and 1,000 ATP points by defeating Frances Tiafoe 2-0 in the final.

September 5, 2024: Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori win the US Open

On September 5, another record was broken for Italian tennis. Vavassori and Errani became the first all-Italian pair to win the mixed doubles title at a Grand Slam tournament.

September 8, 2024: Sinner wins the US Open

The latest achievement of the Italian tennis star came from the USA once again, but this time it was one of the prestigious Grand Slam titles. On September 8, Sinner won his second Slam of the year and of his career, defeating American Taylor Fritz in the final. With this victory, he reached 11,000 ATP points and earned 3,600,000 dollars, concluding the year with the best result of his career, as he awaits the ATP Finals in Turin (November 10-17, 2024).
