The Sinner case continues: WADA proposes 1-2 year ban for doping

Jannik Sinner ’s past demons continue to haunt him. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has weighed in on an incident from March 2024, when the tennis champion tested positive for Clostebol. Despite being cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the future of the world’s number one tennis player remains uncertain.

Sinner’s positive test for Clostebol

Urine tests from March 10 and March 18, 2024, confirmed the presence of Clostebol, leaving the young athlete in an even more precarious situation after a brief moment of relief following the ITIA’s decision.

According to reports, Sinner inadvertently came into contact with the banned substance during a massage from his physiotherapist, who was not wearing gloves. The therapist had previously treated a cut on his finger with Troforedmin, a cream containing Clostebol. During the massage, Sinner—who suffers from localized dermatitis—absorbed the drug through small cuts and wounds on his back and feet.

The contamination appears to have been accidental, with only trace amounts of Clostebol found in his urine. On March 10, Sinner tested positive for 86 picograms per milliliter, which dropped to 76 on March 18. Despite these low levels, WADA has decided to reopen the case to investigate further.

A precedent that could save him

As the tennis star navigates this challenging moment, looking at past cases may offer some clarity. In 2022, Luis Palomino, currently with Cagliari, tested positive for Clostebol while playing for Atalanta. His levels were ten times higher than Sinner’s, but he was ultimately cleared by Italy’s National Anti-Doping Tribunal.

This precedent could work in Sinner’s favor, but only time will tell how the situation unfolds. For now, Sinner is focused on the China Open, where he recently defeated Safiullin in Beijing, securing a spot in the quarterfinals.
