A new smoking ban has been introduced in Italy as part of the smoke-free policy that is increasingly being adopted by major tourist cities. Milan is now in charge of enforcing a smoking ban outside, which will formally take effect at the beginning of the new year.

A minimum distance of 10 meters from people
The new smoking ban requires maintaining a minimum distance of 10 meters from people in open spaces. In overcrowded cities like the Lombardy capital, this ban translates into a subtle battle against smoking. Smokers light up away from the chaos of the busiest and most crowded areas frequented by tourists and locals alike, forcing them to find a quiet spot to enjoy a cigarette.
This change at the start of the new year follows the major step taken in 2021, when smoking was banned near public transportation stops, in parks, and areas close to children’s recreational spaces. In short, Milan is playing all its cards to tighten the grip on smoking in the city, potentially aiming to become a largely smoke-free city in the future.
The fine is hefty: from 40 to 240 euros for those found violating the ban.
Elena Grandi, the City Councillor for Environment and Green Spaces, explained that this is an awareness-raising initiative that expands the scope of a law already in effect since 2021. According to ARPA Lombardia (the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection), cigarette smoke accounts for a significant portion of fine particulate matter: as much as 7% of those present in the area are attributed to cigarettes. Therefore, this is an action aimed at protecting all citizens.
And what about electronic cigarettes? No need to worry for Milanese residents, as e-cigarettes are widely used and even seem to be a must-have for indoor spaces and as a way to sidestep smoking restrictions. The new ban does not impose any limitations in this regard, so e-cigarette users can rest easy.
