67th Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi: The Beauty of Interdisciplinary Arts
Overview
The 67th edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi returns to Spoleto from June 28 to July 14, 2024. As Italy’s oldest performing arts festival, it will present over 60 shows across 17 days and 20 venues. This year’s festival will feature opera, music, dance, theater, performances, and artistic installations, with participation from 30 international companies and more than 600 artists from 20 countries.
Artistic Direction and Theme
Artistic director Monique Veaute continues her focus on interdisciplinary dialogue, providing audiences with innovative and creative experiences from some of the best contemporary artists. This year’s theme is “MYTH,” exploring the complex relationship between individuals and society, a fundamental element of Western civilization.
Opening Concert
The opening concert, conducted by Ivan Fischer, will feature the Budapest Festival Orchestra performing Richard Strauss’s “Ariadne auf Naxos” and the suite from “Le bourgeois gentilhomme.”
Opera and Music Highlights
Award-winning director Damiano Michieletto will present Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice,” performed by the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Vocalconsort Berlin, led by Antonello Manacorda. The festival’s music program includes the return of the popular Midday Concerts with performances by musicians from various esteemed ensembles. Notable performances include a new work by composer Baldwin Giang and an appearance by electronic music artist Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never. The festival will also host concerts by Carla Bruni, Lizz Wright, and Barbara Hannigan.
Theater and Dance Highlights
The theater program features works by new generation playwrights and esteemed international directors, including Antonio Latella and Liv Ferracchiati. The dance program will showcase powerful and innovative works by internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Mehdi Kerkouche, Yoann Bourgeois, Friedemann Vogel, Wayne McGregor, Dimitri Chamblas, and the duo Adrien M & Claire B.
Special Projects and Visual Arts
Special projects include Musica da Casa Menotti, collaborations with the Silvio D’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art, and the La MaMa Spoleto Open series. The visual arts program commemorates former director Giorgio Ferrara with an exhibition, alongside showcases by artists Chiara Camoni, Jonathan Monk, Luis Alberto Rodriguez, and set designer Afra Zamara.
