Explaining and understanding the use of prepositions in Italian isn’t always easy, but today we will begin to delve into the issue by explaining the use of the preposition A. A preposition describes a relationship between words in a sentence. In Italian we normally use the preposition A with cities and islands (“Domani vado a Ischia”) or before a direct object (“Io scrivo a Carlo”). It is also used with different verbs (andare a or fermarsi a) or with phrases that have a particular meaning (sedia a rotelle = wheelchair).
In Italian, there are certain verbs and expressions followed by a preposition such as a, di, per, and su. The preposition a has three basic meanings (to, at, in). For example:
I live in Gorizia. = Io vivo a Gorizia.
I would like to go to Paris. = Mi piacerebbe andare a Parigi.
I like to go on foot when I visit a new city. = Mi piace andare a piedi quando visito una nuova città.
In the evening I prefer stay at home. = Alla sera preferisco stare a casa.
Usually I go to bed at midnight. = Solitamente vado a dormire a mezzanotte.
Would you be interested in buying my car? = Saresti interessato a comprare la mia macchina?
I’ll be ready to leave in about twenty minutes. = Sarò pronto a partire all’incirca tra venti minuti.
I’m not interested in buying a new car. = Io non sono interessato a comprare una nuova macchina.
I’ll see you at home when I get there. = Ti vedrò a casa quando arrivo là.
