Foliage Train Returns: October 12th – November 17th

Autumn has arrived, bringing one of the most anticipated events for season lovers: the journey on the Foliage Train! Until mid-November, you have a unique opportunity to explore one of Europe’s 10 most beautiful railway routes, immersing yourself in the autumn landscapes along the Italian-Swiss border.

Why is this an unforgettable experience?

Imagine being in a romantic movie set in the heart of autumn: that’s exactly the atmosphere you’ll experience during this journey. The Foliage Train travels through forests painted in every shade of autumn, from bright yellow to deep orange.

In the second half of the trip, you’ll find yourself traveling along the western shore of Lake Maggiore, eventually reaching your final destination, Locarno. The sunlight filtering through the birch and chestnut trees creates a stunning spectacle for the eyes, perfect not only for romantics but for anyone who loves nature!

A journey through dreamlike landscapes

Get ready for a magical journey: 52 kilometers of enchanting scenery, crossing 4 fairy-tale valleys, 83 bridges, and 31 tunnels. The route will take you through the majestic Lepontine Alps and the colorful forests of Val Grande, offering postcard-perfect views.

The trip lasts about 4 hours (round trip), and you also have the option to make a stop at one of the charming mountain villages along the way. The trains you’ll travel on are part of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, but for this special occasion, additional rides have been added so that everyone can enjoy the Foliage Train experience.

What makes the journey even more special are the trains themselves: you can choose between historic, vintage-style trains or panoramic and Express trains, featuring large windows that allow you to take in every single detail of the autumn scenery.

How to book your seat on the Foliage Train

Booking your ticket is easy! You can do it online (by clicking here) or visit the station in Santa Maria Maggiore. Tickets can also be purchased on board, but to avoid disappointment, it’s best to book in advance, especially on weekends, when tickets tend to sell out.

  • Weekdays: €36
  • Weekends: €40
  • Children up to 16 years old: 50% discount
  • Children under 5 years old: free

The ticket covers the entire round-trip journey (Domodossola-Locarno).
