In Italy, yet another centenarian has accomplished the impressive feat of renewing their driver’s license after reaching 100 years of age. The last similar case occurred at the beginning of 2024, when a former shipyard worker renewed his license at the remarkable age of 101, becoming the oldest person ever to do so in Italy.
“I’ll be able to keep taking my wife to the beach”
Hearing test, eye test, and a brief interview—these routine exams were no major hurdle for Luciano Gulmini, a native of Ravenna, despite his age. However, he does admit to feeling some anxiety and fear, especially at the thought of no longer being able to take his wife Tebe to the beach. The couple are regular visitors to Lido Adriano, where they meet up with lifelong friends.
Although such events are rare and unusual, they remind us that Italy is indeed a country with an impressive life expectancy. Good food, favorable climate, and breathtaking landscapes are just a few ingredients in the recipe for longevity.

Not renewing his license would have been a nightmare for Luciano, who is remarkably active for his age. He also recalls how, on two wheels, he and Tebe visited several European countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and even the former Yugoslavia. “We’ve always loved to travel and meet people, and we did it for at least a month each year,” says the proud man from Ravenna, rightly celebrating this remarkable achievement.
