Jasmine Paolini is the first Italian woman in the Wimbledon semifinals! Italian tennis keeps on making the country happy, despite Jannik Sinner’s defeat against Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
Jasmine Paolini delivered a perfect match on the same day, becoming the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals. She defeated American Emma Navarro in two sets (6-2, 6-1), playing her best tennis on her debut at Centre Court. Despite previously losing to Navarro in three encounters, Paolini dominated the match from start to finish.
“It’s incredible, winning on this court is amazing. Being in the semifinals and becoming world No. 5 is unbelievable,” an emotional Paolini said. Under coach Renzo Furlan, she has excelled in 2024, reaching the Melbourne quarterfinals, the Paris final, and now the Wimbledon semis.
Her next opponent is Croatia’s Donna Vekic, ranked 37th, who recently defeated New Zealander Lulu Sun. Paolini leads their head-to-head record 2-1. “It will be tough,” Paolini acknowledged. “In a Slam semifinal, there are no easy opponents. Donna is playing great, but I hope to give my best and fight for every point.”
Good luck to Jasmine!
