The Italian team kicks off Euro 2020

The European championship of soccer is about to kick off in Rome. Until July, 11th, all bets are off.

Italy at Euro 2020 isn’t just a participant. The country’s team is ready for redemption, after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. After coach Ventura left in a chaos of criticism and mystery, Mancini is ready to take on the challenge.

Italy at Euro 2020, the team

It’s a given that Italians love soccer. And they love following the national team, whining with it and cheering with the champions. After the heartache of 2017, all eyes are on the this team. It’s Mancini’s team, made of young players and a few, historic pillars. Here’s the Italian team, between promises and old stars. Mancini called 26 players, here are some of the names to look out for.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goalie. Born in 1999, he’s a young promise of Italian soccer. He is talented and one of the most sought off goalies in Europe. In fact, after starting his career with Milan, he’s ready to move on. And Euro 2020 might be his chance to impress teams.

Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. Both players from Juventus, these two defenders are two historic figures of Italian soccer. They bring experience to Italy at Euro 2020.

Niccolò Barella and Matteo Pessina, two of the seven midfielders. Both 24 years old, they proved their worth during the Seria A season. Barella played with Inter, the 2021 Italian champions. On the other hand, Pessina played with Atalanta, a team that surprised everyone.

Finally, the forwards, the ones everyone expects to score. And to score big. Coach Mancini called seven of them. Lorenzo Insigne is the one with the most experience, a pillar of the Naples team. By Insigne is Ciro Immobile, a star of Lazio. Player Giacomo Raspadori is younger, only 21, but expectations are high. So are the ones for Federico Chiesa (23 years old).

Indeed, this national team is a mix of youth and experience. A recipe that Mancini and everyone in Italy hopes to be successful.

The group tournaments of Euro 2020

The championship starts with groups of four teams. It’s six groups, from A to F, for a total of 24 teams. Only the top two move to the next phase of Euro 2020. In this case, Italy’s team at Euro 2020 will face Turkey, Switzerland, and Wales. The match that will kick off the tournament is Italy vs Turkey, on June 11th. Since this is the inauguration, it’s impossible to miss.

Other matches to watch

During the groups phase there are interesting matches, worth keeping an eye (or two) on. Here are the ones that every soccer fan can’t miss (all in local time):

  • England vs Croatia, June 13th, 3pm
